The Graduate School of the Arts (GSA) belongs to the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Bern and the Bern University of the Arts HKB.

Since 2011, graduates of an art, music or theater university can earn a doctor's degree at the GSA – a Switzerland-wide unique cooperation between the University of Bern and the Bern University of the Arts HKB, which offer a joint artistic/creative-scientific doctoral program.

Admission to the doctoral program is open to those who meet the formal requirements and would like to undertake a research project which links the research fields and clusters associated with the HKB or the University of Bern. Knowledge of German (the language used for tuition purposes) with the minimum level B1 is required for the admission to the GSA. The thesis can be written e.g. in English, but about 80% of the workshops and the disciplinary colloquia are in German.
